Chapter Nine

After a week of classes, Jake eagerly looked forward to the hike and picnic he’d planned. To his pleasure, Saturday turned out to be cool, but sunny. A beautiful day for a hike, he decided.

Jake sat on a wooden bench, his backpack beside him. He wore a pair of jeans, an old t-shirt, and his blue jacket. With a ball cap on his head, he tipped his head back so he could get a little sun and closed his eyes behind his sunglasses.

“Hey, Jake, how are you?”

Opening his eyes, Jake bit back a grimace when he saw Christian standing there. He was beginning to get a little worried about the other man’s infatuation with him... especially after only a few weeks of fencing together. Christian seemed to pop up where he was way too often.

The first time Christian had turned up outside his class, wanting to chat with him, Jake hadn’t thought anything about it. The second time, the other man had followed him to the cafeteria and invited himself to sit with him. With Christian turning up much more frequently, Jake was more than a little uncomfortable with the attention.

Jake appreciated the man’s assistance during fencing classes. He feared that his natural friendliness and thanking the man had given him the wrong idea. Even Drew had asked about him, and his roommate was normally oblivious about that sort of thing.

“Doing just fine, Christian,” Jake replied. With his manners in mind, he asked, “How about you?”

“Great,” Christian immediately replied. “Hey, would you like to go for a coffee?”

Jake felt relieved that he had a viable excuse... and one that would gently break it to Christian that he wasn’t interested in more than friendship.

“I’m sorry, Christian, I can’t. I’m waiting for my boyfriend.” Calling Devon his boyfriend was probably a bit of a stretch so early in their courtship, but Jake would totally take advantage if it got the fact that he wasn’t interested through Christian’s thick skull. “We’re headed out of town.”

“You have a boyfriend?” Jake did his best to ignore Christian’s incredulous expression and furrowed brows. “Since when?”

“I’ve been seeing him a while,” Jake replied. Unease slithered down his spine when Christian’s look turned disbelieving. Almost immediately, relief replaced it when Jake spotted Devon’s BMW pull up. He rose, offering a tight smile. “Sorry. He’s here.”

Jake grabbed his backpack and slung it over his shoulder. As he headed away from Christian, he heard his fellow fencing team member say, “You’ve got to be kidding!”

Deciding he’d be better off proving who Devon was to him with actions, Jake sauntered toward the driver’s side door. He pasted a wide grin on his face as he watched the big, older black man ease from his car. Stepping right up into Devon’s personal space, he tipped his head, the move a blatant invitation.

Reaching his left hand up, Jake cradled Devon’s jaw. “Hey, Devon.” He pitched his voice low as he applied gentle pressure, urging the other man’s face down toward him. “Help me get rid of an unwanted suitor.
